This is a hot topic lately and, as the history nerds we are, we decided to go further in depth and see what we can find about Yasuke!

  1. Histoire ecclésiastique des isles et royaumes du Japon (1627) - Yasuke was likely from Mozambique! (likely, so not confirmed). When he was presented to Oda Nobunaga in 1581, the Daimyō thought that his skin must have been ink coloured. He had him strip and scrub himself to prove it wasn't so
  2. Cartas que os padres e irmãos da Companhia de Jesus escreverão dos reynos de Japão e China II (1598). Continues on the above and concludes: "When Nobunaga realized that the African's skin was indeed black, he took an interest in him."
  3. Japanese accounting: "On the 23rd of the 2nd month [23 March 1581], a black page came from the Christian countries. The man was healthy with a good demeanour and Nobunaga praised Yasuke's strength."
  4. Further accountings: it is said that he could speak Japanese and that Nobunaga enjoyed talking to him.
  5. Shinchō ki owned by Sonkeikaku Bunko , the archives of the Maeda clan: Yasuke was given his own residence and a short, ceremonial katana. He was assigned the title of weapon bearer (one who does not fight, but instead stays behind with his lord).
  6. Nobunaga dies at 47 on June 21, 1582.
